1. Introduction
Hong Kong and Macau are some of the most attractive tourist destinations in Asia. There are various ways to get from Hong Kong to Macau, but the cheapest way is by bus. In this blog, I will explain in detail the procedures and points to note for traveling from Hong Kong to Macau by bus. Knowing how to travel by bus will allow you to enjoy a more comfortable and smooth trip.
2. What is the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge?
The “Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge” opened in October 2018.
Previously, the main route to Macau and Zhuhai was by ferry, taking about an hour from Hong Kong. However, a new land route has been added!
It is the world’s longest bridge, spanning 55km (partially an undersea tunnel), connecting Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, and Macau. The Hong Kong Port is the entrance on the Hong Kong side. It is a six-lane highway (three lanes each way) for registered vehicles only. It takes about 40 minutes to travel from Hong Kong to Macau.

How to Access the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge from Hong Kong City
There are airport buses connecting major points in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. There are A line and N line (night bus).
For example, there is the “A11” to Hong Kong Island and the “A21” to Kowloon.
For detailed bus stops, please check the Hong Kong International Airport bus guide or the Citybus page.
In English, the Hong Kong Port of the bridge is indicated as “HZMB Hong Kong Port”.
3. Procedure After Arriving at HZMB Hong Kong Port
After arrival:
・ Pass through immigration
・ Purchase bus tickets and board the bus to Macau
Pass through Immigration
If there are no issues, the immigration process is completed in an instant. Before immigration, there are restrooms and a Circle K convenience store, so use them if needed.
Purchase Bus Tickets
After passing through immigration, purchase a shuttle bus ticket (commonly known as: 金巴). The fare is 65 HKD for adults, 33 HKD for children aged 3 to 12 years or those between 95 cm and 120 cm in height, seniors over 65 years old, and people with disabilities.
※ The fare increases at night. 70 HKD for adults, 35 HKD for others.
Tickets can be purchased from vending machines, where you can pay with an Octopus card.
If you don’t have a child Octopus card, purchase tickets at the manned counter (right next to the machines). Cash and credit card payments can only be made at the counter.
4. Bourding Bus to Macao
After checking your ticket, walk to the bus stop.
Seats are not assigned, so take a seat in the order you board. Buses arrive continuously, so follow the staff’s instructions without rushing.
You will arrive in Macau in about 40 minutes after boarding the bus. Even in winter, the bus is air-conditioned and can be cold, so having a jacket is reassuring. The ride is comfortable, except for the cold.
5. Arriving at the Macau Immigration Building
After arriving, get off the bus and go through Macau immigration. Follow the flow of people, and you won’t have any issues.
Once the immigration check is done, you are free to go.
After entering Macau, you can use taxis or free shuttle buses from various casino hotels.
As of February 2024, Macau taxis only accept cash. Hong Kong dollars are accepted, but change is given in Macau currency. Taxis are recommended for those who want to reach their destination quickly.
It takes about 20-30 minutes to reach each hotel!
6. Returning to Hong Kong
As with the trip to Macau, you can use the free shuttles from major hotels to the Macau Immigration Building (Macau Immigration). Buses run every 10-15 minutes, so don’t worry if you miss one.
You can also pay for the shuttle bus tickets from Macau using an Octopus card.
※ The Octopus card cannot be used within Macau.

After passing through immigration, I boarded the shuttle bus to Hong Kong and returned to the port in about 40 minutes.
7. Pros and Cons of the Shuttle Bus
The shuttle bus is easy to use, but it has its pros and cons.
Pros of the Shuttle Bus | Cons of the Shuttle Bus |
---|---|
– Cheap fare | – Takes longer than the ferry |
– Frequent buses, no need to worry about the schedule | – Multiple stops |
– Avoid seasickness | – Crowded immigration |
My family and I get motion sickness easily, so being able to avoid seasickness was a huge plus, even if it took a bit longer.
In our case,
it took about an hour to the port, 40 minutes from Hong Kong to Macau, and 30 minutes from Macau to the city. Including procedures, it took about 2.5 hours one way.
8. Bonus: The Ferry Takes Only 1 Hour from Hong Kong to Macau
For those who prioritize time, the ferry is recommended. The ferry takes only 1 hour from Hong Kong to Macau, making it an efficient mode of transportation.
It operates from early morning to late at night, making it very convenient. With a time-specific ticket, you can secure your departure time and seat in advance, even during peak seasons. The seat number is assigned on the day at the ferry terminal.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
– Short travel time | – Expensive fare |
– Secure with a time-specific ticket | – Possibility of seasickness |
– Less crowded immigration | – Very cold inside the ferry |
There are two ferry companies.
